1925, New Jersey. Teenage sisters, Bessie and Jo, dream of faraway places as they paint glow-in-the-dark watch dials at the American Radium Factory. When Jo develops a life-threatening disease, Bessie is propelled into a radical coming-of-age struggle as she stands up to the corporation & forces them to admit that they knowingly allowed the women to work with toxic radium.
I was fortunate to reunite with the talented art department from King Jack to build the feminist ghost world of Radium Girls. The look of the film moves beyond the traditional dusty period piece to feel contemporary, our color palette often veers into the toxic and surreal. It was a great challenge designing this ambitious independent feature.
